Case Study - Boosting Team Performance through DISC-based Team Development
The xpand-pro approach:
A three-day Experiential Team Training combined with a Strategy Development Process was set up and conducted for the 12 members of the team. The training was held on a small island on the west coast of Scotland, using an ancient Cathedral and College for the venue. Based on the previously-distributed DISC Behavioural Profile, the members of the team experienced an outdoor-supported Team Training with three important steps in order to fulfil the agreed goals.
- Identifying individual and team potential by using HR Development tools such as the persolog DISC profile, Natural Motivational Abilities Workbook, and Value’s Workshop. In a 4 hour Outdoor Experiential session, team members experienced real-life situations such as conflict, crossing boundaries and the necessity for co-operation in a playful way. This practical experience formed the basis for defining team rules.
- Commenting on each other’s potential by being exposed to positive as well as challenging feedback in open feedback sessions. This produced very encouraging moments, as well as some moments of deep emotion, when people had to face critical, but insightful, feedback from others.
- Strategy Development using existing parts of a Departmental- and Company-wide strategy, and enriching this into a motivating Team Strategy and Code of Conduct. This created an exciting atmosphere and produced committed Team Spirit statements. This Code was later published openly to express the “basics” of the new team identity. The chosen theme was “The Knights of the Round Table”, each committing to one of the 12 core values of the team.
“I doubted that such a training course could really make a difference. But the storyline, the contents and the depth of a new team dimension totally convinced me. Everyone has crossed borders and experienced the team as we never have done before, and I was surprised by how quickly this worked out. My expectations have been met, beyond what I ever thought could happen in three days. It would have been horrible to have missed this opportunity to grow together as a team.”
